County commissioners renew Verizon permits

The Grand County Board of Commissioners has approved the renewal of special use permits for two Verizon Wireless telecommunications sites in Grand County.Verizon Wireless operates a site on Wolford Mountain and one near the intersection of County Road 5 and County Road 5101.The Wolford site houses an 85-foot tower and other equipment. The Fraser site houses a 125-foot tower. Staff recommended approval for both sites with the condition that Verizon paint the antennas and dishes at both locations a dull grey to comply with county regulations.The board approved the renewal of both permits under the condition that Verizon Wireless paints …

John Brice Sheriff was born May 25, 1926, in Denver, Colo., to Glenn and Adaline Morgan Sheriff. His whole life revolved around operating the Sheriff Ranch, which was homesteaded by his great-grandmother and grandfather in 1881.He attended 12 years of school in Hot Sulphur Springs in the building that now houses the Grand County Museum. John served his country in the Pacific Theater of World War II in the U.S. Navy from 1944 through 1946. His ship was in Tokyo Bay on the day the Japanese signed the surrender, ending World War II.Three days later he walked through the rubble …

Two emergency rescues in Rocky Mountain National Park

Two recent emergency rescues were conducted in Rocky Mountain National Park near Forest Canyon and Emerald Lake, respectively. On Sunday, July 19, at 7:30 p.m. park rangers were notified via cell phone that a 13-year-old female from Estes Park had suffered a leg injury roughly a half-mile northwest of The Pool in rugged Forest Canyon in Rocky Mountain National Park.Her father had climbed to higher ground and was fortunate to get cell phone coverage. To the Editor:I am so saddened to read all this hateful rhetoric toward Commissioner Newberry. It seems to me there is lots of assuming guilt when I don’t believe there has been a trial.It seems there is a lot of meanness without any recognition of all the work Commissioner Newberry has provided for the community. This is HOURS of meetings and thoughtful input to VERY important issues to the county.I personally have had to call on Commissioner Newberry pertaining to property issues my family has in the county. Berthoud Pass parking area closed Tuesday

The parking lot, trailhead and restrooms at the top of the Berthoud Pass are closed today, Tuesday, July 21, while a helicopter delivers materials and supplies for the installation of a new avalanche control system at the Stanley Slide.The U.S. Forest Service authorized and permitted the avalanche control system for use by the Colorado Department of Transportation last fall. A Glendale man is in critical condition in a Denver hospital after he was stabbed early Sunday morning, July 19, in Fraser. Investigators believe the suspect, 29-year-old Chanel Bell of Aurora, was meant to be caring for Kenneth Richardson, a 53-year-old double amputee, said Lt. Dan Mayer with the Grand County Sheriff’s Office. Richardson was in fair condition before undergoing surgery Monday morning. Mayer said. A Glendale man is undergoing surgery Monday morning in a Denver hospital after he was stabbed early Sunday morning in Fraser.Investigators believe the suspect, 29-year-old Chanel Bell of Aurora, was meant to be caring for the man, a 54-year-old double amputee, said Lt. Dan Mayer with the Grand County Sheriff’s Office.The incident occurred in a condo on Wapiti Lane around 4 a.m. on July 19, Mayer said. Search for missing hiker bit of a ‘wild goose chase’

A 64-year-old man was rescued Monday, July 20, from the area near Monarch Lake after becoming disoriented.Tim Gorske, of Avon, Ind., activated his emergency locator beacon on Sunday morning, July 19, after wandering off trail.Gorske signaled a Civil Air Patrol aircraft that was participating in the search with a mirror, according to a press release from the CAP.Fourteeth Judicial District Attorney Brett Barkey was part of the aircrew that spotted Gorske.The aircraft then relayed Gorske’s position to members of Grand County Search and Rescue who were able to make contact with him on the ground, according to a press release …

A National Guard helicopter has spotted a missing hiker along the High Lonesome Trail.The helicopter located Tim Gorske of Avon, Ind., after his emergency locator beacon resumed transmitting a signal, said Lt.
