When You Reach Me

Author:
Stead, Rebecca
Publication Date:
2009
gcld.opac.marmot.org/vufind/Record/.b29001869 This was a short read, recommended to be my another staff member who had read it on her Kindle. It is juvenile fiction, and spans a whopping 197 pages. It's written from the perspective of Miranda, a 12 year old girl living in New York City, who receives notes from a mysterious source. These notes hint to the possibility of time travel - but who exactly is it that is time traveling, and why are they coming back to save her friend's life? Miranda tries to figure it out as she deals with new and dying friendships and helps her Mom prepare to be a contestant on "The $20,000 Pyramid". A delightful read that would be great to share with children - especially if they have read "A Wrinkle In Time", since Miranda mentions it frequently. All in all - a quick, enjoyable read.

The Invention of Hugo Cabret

Author:
Selznick, Brian
Publication Date:
2007
This book was brought to my attention when Wilkinson Public Library in Telluride brought the author in for a speaking engagement, which was then broadcast at several Grand County Libraries. I decided to read it when I flipped through and saw that a good portion of the book was illustrations that assisted in telling the story of a young boy who lives in a train station in Paris. It tells a wonderful story with suspense in which you find out why Hugo is responsible for taking care of the clocks in the station and the mystery behind his thievery. The illustrations are a fascinating addition, because unlike pictures in other books, this has several pages in a row of illustrations spread throughout. This would be great to read to your elementary-age kids before bed, or for an adult as a break between longer books. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Wonderstruck : a novel in words and pictures

Author:
Selznick, Brian
Publication Date:
2011
Intertwining pictures and words, Children's Author/Illustrator and Caldecott Award winner Brian Selznick tells two stories - one in pictures, and one in words, that are set years apart but share curious similarities. As the two stories unfold, they weave together into a 'wondrous' journey that transcends both time and place. This uniquely written and illustrated story is a touching reminder that sometimes life may engineer subtle synchronicities to help guide you along your path.   gcld.opac.marmot.org/vufind/Record/.b33516212

This Disney film was delightful. I would highly recommend it, and could see it being one of those movies you watch over, and over, and over, and over.... especially if you're a small child OR if you're the parent of a small child. :)
