Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't stop Talking

Author:
Susan Cain
Publication Date:
2012
I thought this book was fascinating, especially since I consider my self  one of the quiet ones. It was interesting to read the authors breakdown of how introverts and extroverts think differently. This book helped me to see that it is OK to be an introvert, that we are not odd or antisocial, and that we have alot to offer in a  world of extroverts.

There are No Children Here

Author:
Kotlowitz, Alex
Publication Date:
1991
I am reading this Sociology/Black culture  for a book club. Written 20 years ago, it is still a very real, empathetic look at urban poverty. I have not finished it yet, but there are some signs of hope that at least one of the young men will be able to break the cycle and  find happiness and security.   I believe it is the type of writing  that should motivate us all to make real commitments to challenge ourselves in this election year.  Just think what might have been accomplished by now if we had all done so 20 years ago!

Happy accidents

Author:
Jane Lynch
Publication Date:
2011

Jane Lynch, the mean-spirited cheerleading coach on Glee, chronicles her life -- childhood, graduate school, plays, commercials, television.  The path to her Emmy award is an enjoyable story.

Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother

Author:
Chua, Amy
Publication Date:
2011
After all the drama and controversy surrounding this book, I expected something other than a simple memoir of raising children. Chua's book is funny and ironic, not a horrific instruction manual on raising children in the "Chinese way." She is not blind to her own failings and reveals the universal parental truth - everyone wants what they believe is best for their kids.

Let's Ride : Sonny Barger's Guide to Motorcycling

Author:
Ralph "Sonny" Barger
Publication Date:
2010
As a new motorcyclist I felt Sonny Barger's book  was required reading.  The worlds most famous Hell's Angel  has written an entertaining and authoritative guide to mastering the art of motorcycling. To quote Sonny," This book will cover the things you need to do to learn to ride a motorcycle, tell you how to buy the right motorcycle, teach you how to be comfortable and safe, and give you advice on what to do once you start riding."

The Wave: in Pursuit of the Rogues, Freaks, and Giants of the Ocean

Author:
Casey, Susan
Publication Date:
2011
This was a fascinating book and well worth listening to. Although long, I learned a lot and found myself trolling Google for images and movies of rogue waves. I still cannot imagine the 1700-ft wave that smacked Lituya Bay, Alaska in 1958. That's nearly 1/3 of a mile tall. Clearly, hundred-foot waves are not the impossibility scientists once believed, and this is an intriguing peek into the surfers who seek out these monster waves as well as the science (or lack thereof) behind the waves.

The Souce of All Things: A Memoir

Author:
Tracy Ross
Publication Date:
2011
This heartwrenching memoir written by Tracy Ross, a former Winter Park resident and writer for the Manifest newspaper was an unforgettable read.  I almost didn't finish it because it was hard to read about her sexual abuse but am glad I read it through till the end. The author's love for the outdoors provided her with the solace and healing she needed to get through her traumatic childhood experiences.  If you liked Jeannette Walls The Glass Castle I think you'll enjoy this book.

Bossypants

Author:
Tina Fey
Publication Date:
2011

If you like Tina Fey, you will love this book.  If you don't like her then you probably would have never chosen this title in the first place.  I recommend the audio version since it is read by the author, and she adds comments about "listening" to this book which you will not get in the print version.  In surveying her life to date, she can be brutally honest, a bit raunchy and still funny.  I guarantee you will find yourself laughing out loud.

The Money Class: Learn to Create Your New American Dream

Author:
Orman, Suze
Publication Date:
2011

Suze Orman's The Money ClassPerhaps it is my age and my yearning to retire early-ish and still able to make a big dent in my bucket list that caused me to seek out a Suze Orman book.  Non-fiction listening in the car is not my favorite, but my retirement plan motivated me to pay attention.  I would call this a "how to" audiobook with very clear, although sometime overly opinionated, directions from Suze.  I can't think of any aspect of personal finance that she didn't cover well in this book.

Bossypants

Author:
Fey, Tina
Publication Date:
2011
This book was different than I expected, but still good. It started out with a small portion about her family, and then went on to her late teens/early 20's (the part I found most interesting) and finally spent a good bit of the book talking about her life on Saturday Night Live. I laughed out loud at points, and found myself reading late into the night (11pm!). Overall - an enjoyable read.

Bugs of the Underworld - DVD

Author:
written by Ralph Cutter and Lisa Cutter; produced by Ralph Cutter and Larry Huntington.
Publication Date:
2007
I wish I had another set of hands to give this movie 4 thumbs up! This movie's great visual references plainly and accurately depict aquatic invertebrate life cycles... fantastic for the emerging fly-fisher woman! Or... it can easily lull you to sleep, with its classical musical score and its PBS-style narration. Either route you take, you cannot go wrong by checking out this DVD.

Dornstein, Ken

2006
A brother tells the story of his writer-to-be brother who dies in the terrorist bombing of Pan Am Flight 103. Ken tells us the pain he goes through as he reads through old journals of his brother. David is an aspiring writer and writes in his journals that in the possibility of his premature death, how his survivors can take care of his writings.
I’m only a few chapters in but it’s a hard to put down. I want to know how Ken eventually deals with the death of his older brother.

The Glass Castle

Author:
Walls, Jeannette
Publication Date:
2006
I was inspired to re-read this book after having read Half Broke Horses and it continues to be one of my FAVORITE books. I recommend it to everyone. It chronicles the life of Jeannette Walls as she grows up in her dysfunctional family. It's amazing she turned out to be any type of normal, despite her parents negligence.   If you're looking for a spellbinding read - I highly recommend The Glass Castle.
