TOWARD A BETTER LIFE

Author:
Coan, Peter Morton
Publication Date:
Oct 25 2011
This is a historical chronicle of immigrants that came through Ellis Island.  The book spans over 120 years and is broken down by decades.  Each decades includes key historic events, migration flows and famous immigrants for that decade.  The chapter stories are told by the immigrants themselves and also includes some great historical photos.  This was a great read for American history buffs like myself.

Shockaholic

Author:
Carrie Fisher
Publication Date:
2011
Cover Image If you are tired of hearing celebrities whine about how hard it is to be rich and famous, don't check this out. I knew practically nothing of Carrie Fisher before listening to this audiobook, and now I wish I could go back to that. Fortunately, Fisher is able to poke fun at her own egotism, and in the end she is a "shockingly" likeable person.

Prophet's prey : my seven-year investigation into Warren Jeffs and the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints

Author:
Brower, Sam
Publication Date:
2011
Book Cover Prophet's Prey is a gripping account of the seedy underbellly of the polygamist FDLS sects under the control of Warren Jeffs.  This account was written by a private investigator who helped break open the case against Jeffs.  Although Warren Jeffs has always sought to portray himself as pious, persecuted, and innocent of any wrongdoing, this book sheds light on the dark side of the man and his movement. Brower exposes Jeffs as a deviant egomaniac obsessed with power and control, who will stop at nothing (including intimidation, blackmail, and murder) to get his way.  This book is a fast, compelling read!

Seriously...I'm Kidding

Author:
Ellen Degeneres
Publication Date:
2011
DeGeneres offers a definite view on subjects ranging from what to do about clutter to tardiness. It reads like one of her monologues, as she floats from topic to topic. She has a breezy style of writing that seems like conversation with a friend. The comedian includes chapters on her bucket list, the first item being “Buy more buckets.” She also discusses using yoga and meditation to improve your memory and tips on casino gambling. I loved her comments on the back book cover. Instead of comments from other writers praising her book, she has written messages to her readers. A light and fun read.

No Biking in the House Without a Helmet

Author:
Greene, Melissa Fay
Publication Date:
2011
After having four children of their own, Greene and her husband postpone empty-nest syndrome and adopt a little boy from Bulgaria, then four more children from Ethiopia.  This book recalls the hardships and hilarity of the growing family.  Greene never glosses over the difficult side of adoption, especially international adoption, but also recalls the entertaining cross-cultural misunderstandings and her own parenting mishaps.  Greene is a journalist and the book is well-written, heartfelt, and funny.  I'm only halfway through but can wholeheartedly recommend this!

The Heart and the Fist

Author:
Greitens, Eric
Publication Date:
2011
Greitens, a Rhodes scholar and Navy Seal, tells the story of his journey  to protect the weak from the atrocities of war.  After spending time with refugees and street children in Bosnia, Rwanda, and Bolivia, Greitens comes to the conclusion that humanitarian aid will never prevent genocide and other barbarous acts, and is himself willing to put word into deed and defend the powerless. This is a compelling portrait of a compassionate warrior and an interesting reflection on contemporary masculinity.  My only complaint is that Greitens reads his own work in the audiobook and he has a tendency to let his voice trail off at the end of sentences, making it hard to understand.
