I will admit to being a bit of a mystery snob - I prefer my whodunits with a literary bent.
Although Johnson has been writing and winning awards for his Wyoming-based mysteries for a while now, his work is new to me. He is going to become an old friend soon, though, since the other books in this series are at the top of my reading list!
The Cold Dish is the first in the Sheriff Walt Longmire series and begins with the mysterious death of a local boy. The young man was universally disliked in rural Absaroka County, so suspects aren’t hard to come by. When another young man dies, Sheriff Longmire begins to connect the dots. The victims were two of four high school boys given suspended sentences for raping a Cheyenne girl, and the sheriff suspects that someone is out for revenge. Longmire has to protect the other two boys while figuring out which of his neighbors is responsible for the killings.
The characters, dialogue, and setting are enticing and well-developed, making this book a real page-turner.
