New Library Program - 1000 Books Before Kindergarten

1000 Books Before KindergartenDo you have children between 0 and 5 years of age? If so, 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is the Library program for you! GCLD Libraries encourage all Grand County families and caregivers to read 1,000 books with their young children before they enter kindergarten. Studies show that families who start reading aloud to children at birth strengthen language skills and build vocabulary—two important tools for beginning readers. Sounds daunting?  Reading only 3 books a day adds up to over 1,000 books a year! Only one a book a day equals 1,000 books read by the time a new baby is three. Commit to making a difference!

How Does 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Work?

Register – At any Grand County Branch Library and take home your first reading log and starter packet.  Registration begins at story time the week of August 24. Sign up is ongoing, so if you miss the launch, stop by your library anytime to begin.

Track Your Reading – Each time you read a book with your child, fill in a circle on the reading log.
Show us Your Reading Logs – After you’ve read 100 books, stop by the library and you get a really cool bag for carrying all those books.  Along the way, you get additional prizes and books!
Read More Books!  When you get all the way to 1000 books, you’ll get to be part of a special celebration!

If you have any questions about the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program, please contact Grand County Library District's Director of Public Services, Jeanie Johnson, at 970-887-9411 x107 or jjohnson@gcld.org

Shot in the Dark

Howard Gutgesell is a retired pediatric cardiologist who divides his time between Colorado (summer and winter) and Virginia (spring and fall). A long-time photo enthusiast, he has devoted even more time to photography since retirement in 2007. Primarily a landscape photographer, he has become fascinated by night photography in the past year. The present exhibition includes photos from Colorado and Virginia, all taken after dark and with special emphasis on the Milky Way.
